Living up to the Dream

By: Bro. Dexter Egleston

The Zeta Sigma Lambda (ZSL) chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity faced numerous barriers in the lead-up to this year's MLK Day Parade, but with the leadership and commitment to the collaboration of our brothers, we were able to serve our community. On Sunday, January 15th, the Zeta Sigma Lambda (ZSL) chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity successfully hosted the MLK Day Parade in San Diego. The parade, which has been a tradition for over four decades, was a way to celebrate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and bring the community together in a spirit of unity and understanding.

All of us as Alpha men from the ZSL chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha should reflect on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s message of equality and justice and how it is still relevant today. At ZSL, we understand that Dr. King's message of equality and justice is as relevant today as it was when he first shared it with the world. We are committed to promoting social justice and working towards addressing the systemic inequalities and injustices that continue to affect marginalized communities. Through this, ZSL is working to support the next generation and to help them achieve their full potential. ZSL is dedicated to fostering a sense of belonging and civic responsibility among young people through this signature event in the region. We believe that by providing positive role models, mentorship, and support throughout, we can help to inspire and guide young people to reach their full potential.

The parade featured a wide range of participants, including students from schools, performances, floats, the military, the police, and civic leaders. It was led by none other than Mrs. Ardell Matthews, who was named the event's Grand Marshal. Mrs. Matthews, who has served for over 35 years as an educator and member of Delta Sigma Theta Incorporated, was a fitting tribute as her husband Dr. Robert Matthews, also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity helped start this event in the eighties. Her leadership, service, and dedication to the community should inspire all who attended as her accolades were highlighted in media releases leading up to and during the event.
